Well we will start really basic. for the ULTRA NEWBIES. Start with some wire. Galvanied Steel is the easiest to get a hold of and generally your best price. Home Depot sells it in there rope and chain sections. Some Home Hardwares sell it aswell. You will Need about 100 feet for a good start and lets say 18 ga Galvanized steel. I only say this becuase this is my prefered ga for the basics.

Next you will need to attach the wire to the mandrel Your mandrel is basically a dowel be it metal or wood. I will tell you that it is usually better to use a metal dowel again this is just my opinion. Mostly because the wire can 'bite' into the wood thus changing the inner diameter of the ring and also wood has a tendancy to break if too much pressure is blaced on the dowel.

Next you will need a clippin of wire and your vise grips now place the wire on the wire and lock it there with the vise grips

Then I kinda hold it like the above picture placing my thumb over the wire and turning the mandrel using the locking pliers as a handle. Hence why you need to have the pliers locked. When you wind make sure your coils line up |||| snug or again you will change the Inner Diameter of the ring.  Once this is done undo the pliers and voila you have a coil. you may now jump for joy if you please but no victory dances just yet

This is generally How I sit and coil my wire. My leg acts as an anchor for the mandrel.

Tools and Materials

A basic list 'o' things you will need that I am using for this demonstration.
Wire - 18 ga galvanized steel
Mandrel - 1/4" metal
Vise grips - 8 inch grips work well
Snips  - Aviation snips are great but Tin snips will work. Remeber the larger the grips the harder they are to handle but the more mechanical advantage you have
Gloves - because nothing sucks more than friction burn
time - Relax and take your time your in no rush
